I have now begun to illustrate my pages of which there will be 16 in total . Most of the pages will be line work and not fully painted, this is for time purposes, but its ok because Dummy books are not finished books, so as long as the story is coherent and the illustrations are neat and readable, it will fit our brief.
Page 1:
This page is going to be one of my vignettes and so for that reason it is not clean line work and ive started to add colour. I will be fully painting this and publishing the final on an upcoming blog post. As you can see in the current illustration, some of the characters look identical but duplicated , the reason for this is for time saving purposes but in the final iteration they will have been tweaked as to not look like they have been duplicated. As far as i understand, a lot of professionals use similar processes to save time. The reason the edges are not straight is because in the final dummy book I am going to be printing the illustrations as PNG's with the edges fading out. hopefully this will appear like the images are appearing on the pages and almost 'materialising' as the story comes to life. This page so far has not had much feedback from my teachers, although they did suggest that I could add the flag which I have done.
Page 2:
This page will remain as line work. I have a few iterations of this page because I got some feedback off my tutors. David, one of my tutors said that he thought in the initial iteration that the shoe did not look like a 16th century shoe and that it had more of a modern build to it, I agreed. This is the first iteration:
I then went on to change the shoe so that it would look more like a 16th century shoe. However, when i asked for feedback my tutors said that it still wasn't quite right and that they thought it was best I re drew the shoe all together, here is iteration 2:
Finally, I followed the advice given and decided to redraw the shoe rather than tweaking it. It was difficult because of a lack of reference material, and I could not get the same angle on the shoe that I had originally planned, when I tried it didn't look correct and I couldn't find a reference which was in this position, so I decided it was best to change the design slightly. Here is the final iteration which my tutors said is much better:
Page 3:
This page was much easier to make after creating my character reference sheets, because I could use this as a reference for the clothes I was drawing. I have a few minor iterations on this page too, inspired by feedback from my tutors. This is the first iteration, which my tutors said would benefit from having something in the background added:
I followed this advice and added someone in the background, here is the second iteration:
The final piece of feedback was to make the person in the background slightly lighter, as things appear lighter the further away they are from you. This was the final suggestion made by my tutors so here is the final result of page 3:
Page 4:
Page 4 was a nice simple one and there were no suggested changes from my tutors
Reflection:
I am really pleased with the quality of line work I am producing for this project, and I am glad for the suggestions made from my tutors which have really helped me to improve my work, I hope that the story will be coherent as this is really important, I also need to make sure I keep up this level of quality.
These pages will be revisited to make the tweaks to the background as described earlier, so that they are effective PNG's , to be printed onto a slightly yellowed paper, in line with the aesthetic of my folded format. At this stage of the project I am ahead of my schedule, and will reach my targets within the deadline provided I keep up this momentum.
