Steve's Brief- Gluestick Poetry

Image
In this one day brief we were tasked with taking a random page from a book and transforming it into a visual that is relevant to one or more words on the page.  One of the pages out of the 5 that I got was quite adult in nature, and the other quite sarcastic.  I started with creating some thumbnails. These make sense to me but are not very readable  Next I took a couple of my favourite ideas and developed them on tracing paper.  I then worked on some final iterations.  What I aimed to achieve here was a suggestive image around fairly innocent words. There was some parts of this text that were a lot more literal and graphic, but I felt it was more effective to use suggestion. The flower was supposed to suggest female shapes, but only subtly, and the second well, its fairly obvious. I feel this second one may have been TOO obvious, but the two artworks look good when put side by side. I definitely could have done more for this one day project and I think it ...

Experimenting with character design

Image
For this brief we designed characters at random from randomly created blobs on a page. The purpose of this was to help us to generate different visual styles beyond what we might default to otherwise.  These are the ones that I generated randomly from looking at the blobs. I never would have created any of these if I hadn't done this task. Some of them I think are really effective and have elements that I could pull together to create a new visual style. It is definitely a great way to start the journey of creating my character designs for the storytelling brief, and beyond. this is a process that I will continue to experiment with over the course of the project, and in general as a creative tool.

David's Brief- Happy Birthday Song

Image
For this one day brief we had to produce a 4 panel story where each panel is part of the happy birthday song. The panels must be square and you can' have more than 4. To start off we  brainstormed ideas, these are the ideas that I came up with. My thumbnails usually only make sense to me, but I felt I had some strong ideas here. I then selected the idea that I was going to use which was the bottom left idea. I then created my final version.  I'm quite pleased with the results, I think its readable and fun. I think I should have scanned in my idea to not lose any quality. I like my use of 2 ,mediums, pens and pencils, to separate the foreground and background and get some texture. I also like how I added light and dark to the all green mantis'.  If I was going to do this again I think I could have done more dynamic poses and gotten a bit more creative visually, as they are a bit samey. David thought that in the final frame I should have had the actual mantis head com...
