Creating The timeline for my story- Louis XIV

It is important for me to get the key points in the timeline of which to create my story- there were  A LOT of points  in his reign and so I have narrowed it down to what I consider the most important. This will aid the structure of my narrative. Good story layout: Beginning :  -exposition -conflict  Middle:  -rising action -conflict end: - falling action  - resolution  Timeline:  - 1643, became king  -1667, captures spanish netherlands, gained 12 towns, fails to take dutch netherlands -1676, poisoning scandal, Louis afraid he might be poisoned, paranoia  - 1680, worldwide alliance to stop france  -1685, cancels edict of Nantes, many people fled destruction of protestant churches, closure of protestant schools, expulsion of protestant clergy. protestants banned from assembling, their marriages deemed invalid.  Edict of Fontainebleau. -1689, poor harvest, weakened by war, france suffers, taxes increased -1693, frances famine yea...

Playing cards

Image
Before the main task we had a quick ideas generation task where we used shapes to inform character design, here's what I came up with.  In this session we were tasked with creating playing cards using our historical characters!  David requested that we keep to the traditional format of a playing card.  This is my initial design which I then traced and flipped ready to be photocopied.  Throughout the process I had to trace a few times to check that the design was going to line up, and it didn't quite so I corrected the bits that didn't match on the photocopy version.  This is my final design for the playing card. I'm fairly pleased with how it ended up. I think it definitely fits the brief that we were given. I do however, wish that I had used a different medium to colour it, because all I used was standard felt tips and it doesn't have a nice effect in my opinion, and it doesn't leave much room to go back in and add shading if required; so the final piece looks ...

Stamp making with rubbers

Image
For this session we did an exercise where we designed characters, different heads, bodies and legs, that could be mixed and matched to create some weird creatures. We then turned these ideas into stamps on rubbers.  Here are my designs and the results of stamping my rubbers. These are the stamps that I created.  I thought my ideas came out quite well and playful, I am pleased with the results. I can see how stamps like these could be used in book illustrations, not only for time saving purposes but also for continuity. I had never even imagined using stamping in my work before this exercise, but certainly if I require any kind of repetition it would be a wonderful way of doing so.

Matt's One day Project

Image
For this final one day project we were tasked with creating a visual using the theme of valentines day, with the inclusion of typography.  I am not pleased with this result as I didn't take enough time on it due to having to leave early with illness. I would like to come back to this one and develop it more, typography is one of my weakest points as an illustrator.
